Bridging Africa and Asia: University of Nairobi and Huaqiao University Sign Landmark Partnership Agreement
The University of Nairobi has formally established a strategic partnership with Huaqiao University (HQU) following a high-level signing ceremony expected to significantly enhance academic exchange and digital transformation between Kenya and China.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Leonida Kerubo received a six-member delegation from HQU led by He Chunzheng, marking an important step in the university’s efforts to strengthen its global presence.
In her remarks, Prof. Kerubo highlighted the University of Nairobi’s standing as Kenya’s leading institution of higher learning. She noted its extensive academic structure, which includes 10 faculties and 15 specialized research institutes, serving approximately 86,000 students and supported by about 2,000 academic staff. She further underscored the university’s ongoing transition toward full digitization of its operations, aimed at enhancing visibility across Africa while deepening international collaboration. To ensure effective implementation of the partnership, she proposed the establishment of dedicated sub-committees within each faculty to oversee specific programmes.
The delegation from Huaqiao University presented the institution’s strong international outlook. Established in 1960, with campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen, HQU operates under the United Front Work Department and has a distinct mandate to serve overseas Chinese and international students. He Chunzheng emphasized HQU’s recognition as a “Double First-Class” university, with a diverse student population of over 30,000 drawn from more than 80 countries.
The partnership draws on the complementary strengths of both institutions. While the University of Nairobi brings extensive research capacity through its specialized institutes, Huaqiao University offers globally recognized expertise in fields such as engineering, materials science, chemistry, and business. With HQU maintaining partnerships with over 3,000 universities worldwide and ranking prominently in the QS Asian University Rankings, the collaboration opens up valuable opportunities for Nairobi’s students and staff to access advanced research and cross-cultural exchange.
Beyond academic collaboration, the partnership is also expected to enrich student life. HQU is known for its dynamic campus environment, which includes more than 100 student clubs and library resources exceeding 4.6 million volumes. This alliance signals the beginning of a new phase of “Silk Road” education, anchored in digital innovation, cultural exchange, and well-structured academic sub-committees to sustain long-term success.
