Strengthening International Links: CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia Introduces New Exchange Opportunities

In a strategic effort to expand its global academic partnerships, the University of Nairobi hosted a student engagement session for a visiting delegation from Spain’s renowned CEU Cardenal Herrera University (UCH CEU). The interactive forum aimed to connect Nairobi and Valencia, offering students and staff a clear guide to the growing opportunities in international exchange programs.

During the session, David Adorna from the UCH CEU International Admissions Office gave an insightful overview of student life and academics at the institution, which has been a hub of internationalization since its establishment in 1972. With campuses spread across the Valencia region, UCH CEU boasts a diverse student population, with nearly 40 percent comprising international students from 111 countries.

Adorna explained that over the past decade, the university has significantly expanded its English taught programs and strengthened support services, ensuring that language is no longer a barrier to quality education. Erick Chesoni from the University of Nairobi’s International Office encouraged students to take advantage of such opportunities, describing them as key drivers of personal and professional development.

Echoing this, Adorna reflected on his own academic experience in Germany, emphasizing that international education builds resilience and adaptability alongside academic knowledge. He also highlighted a holistic admissions approach that values co-curricular involvement such as volunteering, internships, and language skills, rather than focusing solely on academic scores.

Participants were guided through a streamlined digital application process that concludes with a personal online interview centered on motivation and life experiences. The delegation also introduced a strong financial aid structure, including merit-based scholarships covering between 75 and 100 percent of tuition fees, as well as sports and collaboration grants demonstrating a commitment to making high-quality education accessible regardless of financial background.

The impact of the partnership was further illustrated through testimonials from beneficiaries. Riya Dodhia, a Kenyan student pursuing Dentistry at UCH CEU, shared her positive experience adapting to life in Spain. Similarly, Clement Oluoch, a fifth-year Microbiology student at the University of Nairobi, described his exchange experience in Valencia as a pivotal moment in his academic journey.

Having hosted over 225 international exchange students in the past academic year, UCH CEU continues to strengthen its global outlook. This collaboration reflects the University of Nairobi’s commitment to equipping its students with the skills and exposure needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world, while expanding opportunities for its community on the global stage.
